Raised in the penny-pinching days following World War II, Karen Lynn Davidson
developed what she calls a "Savings Bond Mentality": aversion to risk and
unpredictability. However, her own life became a study in unpredictability.
Bachelor's and master's degrees in English yielded a ten-year teaching
position at BYU, but no husband. But Karen decided that single or married, she
wouldn't wait for someone else to make her happy. She launched a fulfilling
career of teaching and writing, including composing the words to "Each Life
that Touches Ours for Good" (Hymns, no. 293). After Karen's appointment as Honors Program Director, her life took another unexpected turn. David Davidson, reading about her in a BYU alumni publication, called one evening and introduced himself. Their telephone courtship led to marriage, and Karen joined him in California. Moving from Texas, to California, to the east coast, Karen earned a Ph.D. She is now collecting Eliza R. Snow's poetry for publication. Of her experiences as a student, a scholar, a writer, a single woman, a wife, and a mother, Karen comments, "I haven't always managed to arrange . . . perfect predictability in my life, but on the whole, I feel overwhelmed when I think of my good fortune: family relationships, friends, educational opportunities, and the guiding framework of the Gospel of Jesus Christ." ______________________________
