Admissions

We congratulate you for having an interest in Brigham Young University. This is a unique university which provides not only academics but spiritual insights as well.

Application materials are available upon written or verbal request at the Admissions Office (A-153 ASB). Be advised that there are deadlines that need to be met for each semester. For fall admission, deadlines occur around the first of February, and deadlines for winter are typically around the first of October. There is no special consideration for nontraditional students; therefore, admission for all students is based on the same criteria. Reentry students applying for admission are in one of three categories: new freshmen, former, or transfer applicants.

If you have not yet attended college, you should apply as a new freshman applicant. Consideration for admission to BYU is based on several different factors: high school GPA, ACT score, student essay, letters of recommendation, and ecclesiastical endorsement.  Criteria can be found online at http://saas.byu.edu/admissionsServices/schoolRelations/pf/admissions/index.htm. If your high school GPA or ACT score does not meet current criteria, we recommend that you make an appointment with one of the counselors in the Admissions Office to see what other options are available to you. If you are a former student at BYU, you must go through the admission process again and submit the admission application which is available in the Admissions Office.  You do not need to include letters of recommendation or a student essay.  However, you may include a letter with your application explaining your current circumstances if you think that it might be to your advantage. We recommend that you make an appointment with a counselor in the Admissions Office. The counselor can review your records with you and will give you valuable information on how to proceed with your own admission process.

If you are a transfer student, you must submit to the Admissions Office the admission application form which is available in the Admissions Office. You will need letters of recommendation, a student essay, an ecclesiastical endorsement, and transcripts from all of the colleges you have attended.  You also might want to examine a copy of the articulation agreement that shows the general education classes that transfer from your transfer institution.  These can be found online (http://saas.byu.edu/admissionsServices/transferEvaluation/articulationAgreements.php) or at the University Advisement Center (2500 WSC). We recommend that you make an appointment with a counselor in the Admissions Office who will advise you about the necessary steps you need to take as a transfer student in applying for admission.

When you decide you would like to apply for admission, apply online (http://www.besmart.com/apply.honorcode.php) or obtain your materials from the Admissions Office (A-153 ASB, 422-2507) and submit them as soon as possible.  There is an official enrollment ceiling established by the Board of Trustees and when that ceiling is reached, no more applications will be considered.  We highly recommend that you visit with one of the counselors in the Admissions Office because they have particular insight into the admission process and can give you the encouragement and direction that you seek.  Although there is no guarantee for admission even if you seem to meet all of the criteria, there are many students at BYU and you could certainly be one of them!
