Alternative Enrollment If you are not yet accepted as a full-time student at BYU, there are alternatives to full time enrollment offered through the Division of Continuing Education. These options allow you to take classes towards a degree whether you have been admitted to BYU or not. The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program offers former students an opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degrees from home. The program offers courses through independent study that count towards a liberal arts degree with a choice from eight different emphases. The program is open to those who have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of BYU or transferable college credit and have at least a 2.0 GPA. It is required that you spend at least two years out of school before beginning the program. If you have never attended BYU, you must be able to meet the 30-credit-hour campus residency requirement and be at least 23 years of age. Once formally admitted to the BGS program, students are also granted registration eligibility to enroll in classes at the Independent Study courses are also offered through The Division of Continuing Education. Anyone can enroll in the Independent Study classes; however this does not constitute admission to BYU. These classes are completed over a certain time period without requiring any class attendance. Registration is completed online (http://ce.byu.edu/is). For more information, contact the Independent Study Office (206 HCEB, 422-2868 or 1-800-914-8931). Evening classes may be another option. Students who have been officially admitted to the university can take any course offered without a credit-hour restriction. Persons who have not been formally admitted to the university and are at least 23 years of age may take up to 8.5 credit hours per semester (6 hours during a spring/summer term) through the Division of Continuing Education. Persons who are at least 55 years of age may register for $10 per class, but all classes must be for audit only and on a space-available basis beginning the first day of class. To register, a “Clearance to Register” form may be obtained online (http://ce.byu.edu/ev/clearance.cfm) or from the Evening Classes Office (422-2872). Scholarships are available on a limited basis for single parents and disabled persons with significant financial need. Application forms may be requested from the Evening Classes Office (422-2872). |
