With a positive body image, a woman has a realistic perspective of what her body looks like and is comfortable with what she sees. A woman with a negative body image has a distorted view of her body, compares herself to others, and feels shame and anxiety about her body. A poor body image can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, dieting, eating disorders, and emotional distress.

Eating disorders arise from a complex combination of factors, including psychological, interpersonal, genetic, and social conditions. Feelings of inadequacy, depression, anxiety, and loneliness, as well as troubled family and personal relationships, may contribute to the development of an eating disorder.

Dieting, bingeing, and purging are destructive attempts for some people to cope with painful emotions and to feel as if they are in control of their lives. In reality, these behaviors undermine physical health, self-esteem, competence, and control.
