In his book Standing for Something, President Hinckley said, “The problem with most of us is that we are afraid to stand up for what we believe, to be witnesses for what is true and right. We want to do the right thing, but we are troubled by fears. So we sit back, and the world drifts about us . . . "
It certainly takes strength of heart to stand up for what we believe in. The word courage derives from the French word for heart. We hope that students will join us in our efforts to promote Voices of Courage.
Voices of Courage is a campaign to encourage students to have the courage to speak up when they observe disrespectful or abusive behavior among their peers. We want students to understand that abuse is more than just a physical act. It includes taking advantage of or using another person, manipulation and coercion. Healthy relationships are built upon principles of respect, kindness and love. Voices of Courage is about extracting everything that is out of harmony with these ideals from our interactions. We hope that students will embrace their role as their “brother’s and sister’s keeper,” to own up to their responsibility to protect one another, and to speak up against inappropriate behavior whenever encountered.
